From The Monterey Preventive Medical Clinic :

The cover story of American Medical News in November 13, 2006 had the headline, “Family Physician happy to be a big loser.” Dr. Jeffrey Levine, MD, MPH, a 44-year old family physician was the winner on the Biggest Loser, a reality TV show about weight loss. He realized he was in trouble at 400 pounds, when he could not walk without pain. In his interview with Susan Landers, the author of the article, he said, “It was a 10 week commitment, which turned into 13 weeks, away from my job and family, but my family and friends begged me to go on.”  When Dr. Levine was questioned about what he now tells patients since he has lost about 200 pounds?  His response is a perfect motivation for those who want to become the biggest losers.

“ I ‘m sending you to school. You’re the subject, and the class lasts the rest of your life. A lot of patients can’t or never will reach their ideal body weight. Weight loss becomes a matter of winning or losing, success or failure. I try to get away from that and ask, ‘what’s something you can’t do now and you want to do? The message is to eat smart, eat healthy, be active and feel good. The weight loss is the icing on the cake, no pun intended.”

I add the following written prescription:

  • Focus your diet on fruits and vegetables. (5 to 8 servings are best).
  • Eat whole-grain cereals, bread, pasta and brown rice when you are hungry.
  • Limit intake of saturated fat and try to eliminate trans fats from your diet. (Avoid any food that has Zero Trans Fats on the label. It’s all junk food.)
  • Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as walking, at least 5 days a week. (The optimum is daily)
